Radiofrequency Ablation: What to Expect

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is one of the most effective modern treatments for varicose veins. It uses controlled heat to close faulty veins from the inside, and is performed as a walk-in, walk-out procedure under local anaesthetic.

Step 1: Consultation and scan

Your journey begins with a consultation with Mr Sidloff, which includes a specialist duplex ultrasound scan. This painless scan maps the veins in your legs, identifies exactly where the valves are failing, and determines whether RFA is the right treatment for you.

Step 2: The procedure

RFA is performed under local anaesthetic, so you are awake throughout. A thin catheter is guided into the affected vein using ultrasound. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy that heats the vein wall, causing it to seal shut. Blood is naturally rerouted through healthy veins.

The procedure typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes per leg. We use the Medtronic ClosureFast system, which is the gold standard for radiofrequency ablation.

Step 3: Going home

Because RFA is minimally invasive, you walk out of the clinic the same day. There is no general anaesthetic and no overnight stay. Most patients are back to their normal daily activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for around two weeks.

Recovery and results

Some mild bruising or tenderness along the treated vein is normal and typically settles within two weeks. Around 90% of patients experience significant symptom resolution — less aching, reduced swelling, and improved appearance.

A follow-up scan is arranged to confirm the vein has closed successfully and to check your progress.

Is RFA right for you?

RFA is suitable for most patients with varicose veins caused by venous reflux. The duplex ultrasound scan at your consultation will confirm whether it is the best option, or whether foam sclerotherapy or avulsions might be more appropriate — either alone or in combination.
